Over the last couple of weeks I have been hearing the persecution of Christians around the world. Not that’s anything new. What is new is the amount of incidents that are being reported. From the murder of an American missionary across the Mexican border to the killing of Christians in Egypt. One common thread they all have…they are in places where religious freedom is either curtailed, or non-existent.
What about here in America? Do we honestly believe that God will protect us because we are Americans? Are we to think that because we send more missionaries, more Bibles, more money to propagate the Gospel than any other nation on Earth, that we are exempt from shepherding the rights and freedoms that He has entrusted to us? The one thing I believe that the Church in America has forgotten, is the primary reason why America was founded to begin with. This country was founded on religious persecution. There were those in Europe who wanted to escape State-run religion and religious activities. Our founders knew that evil unrestrained today will be evil in control tomorrow. This is why people such as George Washington who said “It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible”. Note he did not say you could not govern. He said you could not rightly govern. It is why John Adams – Second President and Chief Architect of our Constitution said, “Our Constitution is for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the governing of any other”. Notice he made a distinction between being a moral and being a religious person. Which simply means you can be a morally oriented, patriot minded person and still not believe that the God of the Bible gave you the freedoms that you enjoy.
That being said, what about us? The ones who claim Jesus is Lord (according to Romans 10:9)? Do we just lay down and wait on the Rapture? While I myself do wait, hope and anticipate for that most blessed event, I would rather have Jesus find me working to keeping the Gospel free to preach and provide the opportunity for people being able to hear it. The only two ways that could happen in America is by the prayers, repentance and education of the Church in America that we, not the politicians are the guardians of our rights and freedoms. Secondly, by voting responsibly and to hold those we put in authority accountable to we the people. It is in this two prong approach that will give us the time needed to reach the lost with His saving message, as well as having the ability to prosper our nation. Alexis De Tocqueville, a French philosopher said, “When America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great”. He discovered that the greatness in America is found in our churches.
