I am amazed how much blindness is around Washington D.C From Obama ignoring the Deep Horizon spill for 70 days before he accepted help from governments around the world. How the Department of Justice dropped the charges of voter intimidation on the New Black Panther Party. While that was happening, Attorney General Eric Holder is in Afghanistan – a little out of his jurisdiction I might add. Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA) stated, “The (southern) border is secure”. The next day, a bullet whizzed through the City Manager’s office in El Paso, TX. that came from across the border in Juarez, MX. Elena Kagan who has no business being in a courtroom, is trying to fill a U.S. Supreme Court vacancy. We are still funding two wars and thinking about starting a third (Iran). We have made it official policy to turn our back on Israel. The same question that I have asked before, bears repeating, “Where is the Church”?
What people do not realize is that these people in Washington or in or in our respective state capitals or even at the local level where you live, did not strong arm you, did not threaten your family, did not put a gun to your head either. Simply put, the reason they are in positions of authority is because you CHOSE THEM. Before you question the politician’s integrity, how and why you made the choice you made needs to be scrutinized first.
People do not make choices like this on a whim. They have to put some thought into it. Deep choices require deep thought. Deep thought requires critical thinking – something that Americans by and large loathe. In my observation, the ones who loathe it the most can be found on a pew at 11:00am on Sunday Morning. Why? Because the one who stands in front of them doesn’t want them to think. They want them to feel good. One thing about feelings, they are fickle and you can not trust them to make serious decisions. Having a good time and an euphoric feeling at 11:00am does not change the world at 12:30 pm. A lot of people had euphoric feelings on November 4, 2008, not because we had a peaceful transition of power. Because a man’s skin color has changed who in charge of our country. If we asked them again – 18 months later, “How do you feel” I think you would get a different response from most of the people.
The Founders of our modern day faith got it right. A classic example is Charles Finney who had said, “"If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discernment, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in Christianity, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it.
Charles Finney, a man who died and was buried 140 years ago is preaching a sermon to America. We would be wise if we would listen to it.
